For Therapists Only

Make self-care and professional growth a priority by connecting with other therapists using art in a supportive environment while getting 12.5 CEUs.

Join us for this 5 month group (meeting once monthly) as we support each other in exploring how art therapy can sustain and revitalize us as therapists and inform our work with clients. Each of the five group meetings will introduce a theme that includes:

  • Discussion of art therapy in relation to each therapistʼs client population
  • Hands-on use of art therapy interventions and materials related to the theme
  • Discussion of what emerged in the art making (process and product)
  • Handout with information on supporting materials and readings for the month

Week 1: How to Deepen our Responsiveness to our Clients.
Participants will demonstrate how to be more open to what emerges moment to moment in the therapeutic encounter. In using the art in therapy, participants can evaluate the degree to which their senses are enlivened by the use of artistic media in response to client needs.

Week 2: Uncovering & Responding to Countertransference.
Participants will demonstrate the ability to make art to track their unconscious response to client issues. Participants will show how their own stories and that of their clients are interwoven through the use of clay sculptures.

Week 3: Creativity and Resiliency.
Participants will demonstrate through the use of mono prints how they can respond to the clients who are draining their energy. They will show examples of their creative responses to the physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs they encounter in their sessions.

Week 4: Self Nurturance.
Participants will demonstrate their ability to create a physical container for the values explored in the therapeutic encounter.

Week 5: Tracking and Evaluation
Participants will demonstrate the ability to match art media choice with clients’ developmental and emotional level. They will display an understanding of the use of directive and non-directive interventions.

Group Schedule:

9:30 am - 12:00 pm First Friday of the month. Call to see when the next 5-month session begins.

Registration Fees:

$375 + $25 materials fee for entire series
$75 for 12.5 CEUs

CREATIVITY AND RESILIENCY
How do we use the creative process to respond to those who drain us? How can the difficult clients be “met” more deeply?

SELF NURTURANCE
How can we stay a step ahead by keeping the “creative well” filled? How can art be a soothing container?

TRACKING
How do we follow our clients to enhance the therapeutic alliance? How do we know what/when to introduce media and directives?

Grievance Policy

The California Center for Creative Renewal is fully committed to conducting all activities in an ethical manner and will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Center’s Director, Ellen Speert.

While the Center works diligently to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there may be issues which come to the attention of the director and/or workshop presenters which will require intervention and/or action on their part. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.

When a participant, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken.

1. The participant will be asked to put their concerns in writing.

2. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The Center Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its’ content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the Center Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the Center Director will:

a. attempt to move the participant to another workshop or

b. provide a credit for a subsequent year's workshop or

c. provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee

Actions 3b and 3c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.

ADA Policy

Special Needs: Every effort will be made to provide facilities accessible to persons with disabilities. If you have a special need and plan to attend the workshop, please contact Ellen Speert, Director of the California Center for Creative Renewal at (760) 436-3310 or via email at ellen@artRETREATS.com.
