FAQ

~ Iʼm not an artist so how does art therapy work?
We start with just enjoying the feel of the materials. The benefit of art therapy emerges from the exploration and simple expression within a gently guided experience. No artistic skill is needed.

~ How big is the property? Can I make art outdoors?
The Center is 1 1/2 acres of healing gardens with an indoor and outdoor studio. By making art outdoors in one of the many alcoves, and by walking the labyrinth, you will find a deeper connection to the earth and to yourself.

~ Isnʼt art for just for kids?
We have created a “play ground for adults” here. Art is for everyone and we are committed to returning the playful, yet serious, work of art therapy to adults.

~ How long have you been here?
We started developing the Center in 1981 but the work continues. Every year we plant new trees and create new alcoves including walking paths throughout the gardens and into the canyon.

~ What do the letters after your name mean: ATR-BC and REAT?
ATR-BC means that I am a Registered, Board Certified Art Therapist with the American Art Therapy Credentials Board, the national licensing board for art therapists. REAT means that I am a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist with the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association, the international licensing board for expressive arts therapists.

~ Do you play music while we make art?
I do not provide music as I find the silence and songs of the birds are the best background for finding our unique creative voice. We will have time to talk at the beginning and ending of every session but mostly we will be quietly making art.

~ Can people stay overnight on retreat?
Actually we are a day retreat center only, but we do have an arrangement with a Bed & Breakfast 1/2 mile away. People coming on retreat from out of town will want to contact the Holiday Inn Express at 760-944-0427.

~ Do you provide meals for retreats?
Yes, we have wonderful catering which can be arranged for a modest per/person rate. We provide fruits, juices and eggs grown here in the Center gardens and can provide vegan, vegetarian or meat options. All meals are healthy and well balanced.
